The other day I took a walk with my youngest.

Walking the dog ✔️
I started chattering away, asking her ALL the questions about school. Then I attempted to chip away at some reading practice by having her read street signs to me. Then we were counting our steps. I was feeling pretty good about this walk when…
All of the sudden I looked at her little face and I realized something so important…I was making this walk about me, not her. We were following my grown up agenda.
If I really wanted to connect with her and find out what goes on in that little mind, I needed to chose a different path.
You know what I did? I SHUT MY MOUTH AND LISTENED.
Guess what happened after a minute or two of awkward silence?
She got to empty her mind. She told me about a show she watched about horses. Then she told me about an argument she had with her sister and all about a classmate who always forgets her pencils.
She told me about the things that were on her mind.
If you want your child to talk to you and let you in on the inner workings of their little minds, you need to s to listen. Stop talking and just listen.
It might feel awkward or uncomfortable at first, but if you practice, you’ll learn so much more about your child.
Here is a challenge for you today: Find a pocket of time to walk with your child and just listen. You are going to be amazed at what you find out.
