School Starts Tomorrow and No One Feels Ready
How to ease the shift without a pep talk or a perfect plan.

There’s something about the January return to school that hits harder than the other breaks. Maybe it’s the long stretch of home days. The open-ended mornings. The weird sleep schedules. The fact that no one knows what day it is, the new shoes don’t fit, and someone’s still wearing a Santa pajama top.
Even if your kid likes school, the shift back can feel big and overwhelming for everyone.
And even when you expect it to be bumpy, it still catches you off guard. The tears. The resistance. The “my tummy hurts” at bedtime that’s probably not about their stomach.
The fact that you prayed for this day to come when you were trying to make it through the post-Christmas, pre-New Year week, while stepping on tiny toys and trying to find a way to entertain them without taking them to a playspace where they’d for sure catch the plague.
Alas, it’s the final weekend of break, and you ALL have a serious case of the Sunday Scaries. You’re tired. They’re wired. No one remembers how to pack a lunch, and the thought of setting an alarm feels cruel.
You’ve made it through the long stretch of snacks and negotiations and tiny toy pieces underfoot. Now comes the part where you help everyone remember how to be a person with a backpack and a start time.
Here’s what’s in this post:
• The one-liner that helps kids shift out of home mode without a power struggle
• Simple evening moves that make Monday morning less chaotic
• Conversation starters that reconnect them with school before they walk through the door
• How to name their feelings without making them bigger
• The phrase I use when they say they really don’t want to go
If your house is feeling wobbly heading into Monday, this one’s for you.
