Five parenting opinions I swear by in my own house
You will disagree with at least one of these parenting opinions, and I am okay with that.
Hi! I don’t usually email on a Saturday, but so many new people showed up here this month that I want to say hi properly, and I figured that the rest of you won’t mind hearing how I parent again..
My favorite thing about Substack is the room for nuance. I am so over clickbait and rage bait and everything else that gives you whiplash and then never explains itself. So this is me, explaining myself.
I’m Lizzie, I’m really glad you’re here, and there are a few things you should know about how I parent.
Five parenting opinions I swear by in my own house. Steal the ones that sound like your house. Leave the rest behind.
Letting my kids quit things that are no longer serving them is brave, and gives them more room to grow than making them stick it out on principle.
My kids don’t follow the same rules. I parent each of them differently on purpose, even when it looks unfair.
I don’t believe kids outgrow making and playing. They just lose the time and easy access to materials. My kids are 13, 16 and 18 and I still put markers, paint, toys and puzzles on my kitchen counter for them to play with.
Teenagers get terrible PR. They’re more fun than anyone lets on. When I stopped having an agenda for every conversation, everyone in the house relaxed.
I won’t coach my kids to fit in. I raise them to be comfortable with who they really are rather than trying to please a crowd of people who want them to be someone else.
