Simple Nature Art for Kids

This project is about gathering and creating together, not the final outcome of the leaves. Focusing on process, not product will allow you to let go, and have fun with your kids!

Materials:

  • Nature - Leaves, acorns, seedpods, etc.

  • Acrylic Paint Pens - This time we used THESE but also love THESE and THESE as alternatives.

How to:

1. Collect your natural materials.

2. Collect your leaves. Go on a walk and pick up interesting leaves. Bring a little basket and let your child lead the way. For best results, press your leaves under a heavy book for 24 hours. If you want to get started right away, go for it. Press them after you create!

3. Collect seed pods and acorns - Spread them on a cookie sheet and bake at low heat for around twenty minutes (keep an eye on them). This will kill off any little bugs or larva living inside. You can do this before or after you create. Again, if you are looking for something to do today, your can wait on the baking.

4. Be sure to prime your acrylic markers according to package directions ahead of when you want to use them. Don’t have paint pens? Don’t worry. Use regular paint instead. Put out small paintbrushes and small pots of washable paint.

5. Have your kids get to CREATING!

This nature activity for kids really is so simple but it kept the children engaged for a long time.
