Winter Activity for Kids in the Woods

winter activity for kids

Winter is my favorite time to explore the woods. I love the lack of creepy crawly bugs and I savor the quiet. This is a wonderful activity if you are avoiding the crowds or looking for an outdoor playdate activity.

All you need is some heavy thread ( hemp is a good choice because it is biodegradable) and a thick, plastic needle or floral wire.

Head into the woods and roll out a blanket. It serves as a landing pad when the kids need a break. It also gives you a spot to chill while they explore and play.

Easy Winter Activity for Kids

On this particular day, I set out the cranberries after the children had scampered off. Sloane came over to check it out and she got right to work. The thin wire pokes easily through the cranberries making it an easy winter activity for small hands. (edited to add, Sloane was about 5 years old)

I observed her as she counted and sang while exercising those little fingers in this great fine motor activity. When she was satisfied, She wrapped her garland along a low branch for the birds and fox to snack on.

Ruby, on the other hand, filled her pockets with fresh cranberries and stuck them at the base of trees, and scattered them along the edge of frozen water. She giggled to herself and when I asked why she said, “I am imagining when the animals are out walking and they discover these treats! I wonder what their faces will look like!!” (Ruby was 8)

Nate was all about climbing, and could not be bothered to sit still and string up anything. He did, however, have fun hanging some of Sloane’s creations up high. (Nate was 10)

I hope this simple activity gets you outside this winter! You can string up popcorn or fruit if you don’t have cranberries
